Jazz Piano Skills 101

Day 2 - Bb Blues

Welcome to Day 2 of Jazz Piano Skills 101!

Now that you've got a handle on some standard blues voicings, we’re going to take those exact same voicings and transpose them to another equally common key. This will help solidify the voicings in your mind and get you introduced to transposing them into every key.

First master the voicings on the “Bb Blues (Reference)” sheet out-of-time, and then once your hands are familiar with them, move onto the “Bb Blues (Version 1)” and “Bb Blues (Version 2)” exercises to play them in-time using a metronome.

There are two versions so you get practice playing multiple voicings over the same measure and in the “Bb Blues (Version 2)”. We specifically included some rhythmic variation so you can acquire comping skills beyond whole notes, and move to actual rhythms jazz pianist use when they comp over the blues.

Take some time to shed these as we’ll be using them again when we cover major and minor ii-v-i progressions tomorrow!
